Danielle (not her real name) is a foreign national who came to Korea to work in order to help support her family back home. We met her almost a year after she had given birth alone here in a foreign country where she did not speak the language and had no support. Danielle is a brave, persevering, loving unwed mother to her baby girl. Just as she was running out of things to sell in her one-room for food and was about to be kicked out on to the street for not having paid rent for almost a year, she found WHC.
Danielle needs to get back home.
She, however, has a medical bill debt of over 4million won she needs to pay to the hospital where her baby girl was born. Her baby girl was born sick and needed to be in the neonatal intensive care unit for several days. Since she could not pay the bill when it was time to leave the hospital kept her passport. Without her passport she could not get a new visa for herself nor apply for her baby`s passport.
Thanks to the Handong Arise Legal Clinic`s advocacy, Danielle has had her passport returned and WHC managed to raise enough funds quickly to help her acquire a tourist visa. But this tourist visa expires on January 25th. She needs to be able to pay off her medical debt and buy a one-way plane ticket back home with her baby before then.
Her baby`s passport is being processed and we expect it to come in late December.
